Minecraft Enchantment Order Calculator
Same Java Edition planner as the homepage, focused on merge order. Enter the item and books you actually have. Use the printed tree when every step fits survival; if a step is Too Expensive, start from a fresh item or drop a book instead of following a rejected cheaper total.
Enchantment order calculator
Optimal order · XP cost · Too-Expensive guardPick the gear you want to enchant. Books you add below will be merged onto it in the cheapest order we can find.
Worked example: sword loadout
Inputs: Fresh sword (prior-work 0); Sharpness V book; Looting III book; Unbreaking III book; Mending book. Least-XP mode. The left-to-right apply costs 38 levels. The planner's merge tree costs 36 levels and still produces Sharpness V, Looting III, Unbreaking III, and Mending.
Naive order (left to right)
- Combine Sword with Book (Sharpness V) 5 XP
- Combine Sword (Sharpness V), prior-work 1 with Book (Looting III) 13 XP
- Combine Sword (Sharpness V, Looting III), prior-work 2 with Book (Unbreaking III) 9 XP
- Combine Sword (Sharpness V, Looting III, Unbreaking III), prior-work 3 with Book (Mending I) 11 XP
Total: 38 XP
Planner order
- Combine Sword with Book (Sharpness V) 5 XP
- Combine Sword (Sharpness V), prior-work 1 with Book (Looting III) 13 XP
- Combine Book (Unbreaking III) with Book (Mending I) 4 XP
- Combine Sword (Sharpness V, Looting III), prior-work 2 with Book (Unbreaking III, Mending I), prior-work 1 14 XP
Total: 36 XP · fits survival
Failure case: invalid order
Inputs: fresh sword, Sharpness V book, Smite V book. The planner returns Sharpness conflicts with Smite and does not print steps. Survival will also refuse that pair, so there is no cheaper tree to search.
Use the anvil calculator when you want a single combine preview, or the XP cost calculator when the order is legal but a step hits the 40-level cap.
FAQ
- Why does enchantment order change XP cost?
- Each anvil use raises prior-work on the result (penalty 2^n - 1). Applying four books one-by-one onto the sword stacks that penalty on the item. Pairing books first keeps most of the penalty on the books, so the last apply onto the sword stays cheaper.
- What counts as an invalid order?
- Any set that includes a conflict, such as Sharpness with Smite, or an enchantment the item cannot receive. The planner refuses those bundles before it searches merge trees, so you do not spend levels on a combine survival will also reject.
- Does this try every legal order?
- No. For eight or fewer books it searches merge trees of book-pairs plus applies onto the item, but it does not try every anvil orientation of each pair. For nine or more books it applies remaining books onto the item greedily, without pairing first. Both modes still flag any step that reaches 40 levels.
- Can I start from an already-enchanted item or a multi-enchant book?
- Not as one input. The live planner starts from an unenchanted target plus prior-work, and each row is one one-enchantment book. If a book in your inventory already holds several enchantments, that is one sacrifice in-game; this UI cannot represent that bundle yet.
- Is this Java Edition or Bedrock?
- Java Edition anvil planning with current spear and mace data. Confirm a valuable combine in your own world if you use Bedrock, mods, datapacks, or snapshots.
